Sociological Association

The Sociological Association of the University of Ruhuna was set up on July 25, 1990 at the Department of History and Sociology. At present, this Association is registered under the Department of Sociology. Membership is open to the students who follow the honors degree in Sociology and the other students who follow the general degree. From the beginning, this association has initiated many programmes such as publishing student journals and conducting workshops and cultural events.

Objectives

The Sociological Association aims to facilitate sociological research and promotes network of communication to all who are interested in the discipline. This is evidenced by the successful activities of the publication of student journal “Vimarsha”.

Activities

Community Based Activity

Date:- 15^th January 2020

Venue:-Uda-Aparekka Village, Dondra, Matara

The Sociological Association organized a community based program (including Shramadhana Campaign) at Uda-Aparekka village. This program was conducted with the collaboration of Divisional Secretariat Office, Dondra. Senior Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna participated as the chief guest of this occasion and Prof. Saman Chandana, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna participated as the guest of honor. The program was conducted successfully and the main aim of this program was to uplift the community participation and active participation in order to promote community based activities among the villagers and university students.

Workshop on Academic Research and the Art of Academic Writing

Venue:- Lt3 Hall, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Sociological Association organized a Workshop on Academic Research and the Art of Academic Writing for the students of faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The workshop was conducted by Mr.Upul Sanjeewa Wijepala ( Lecturer, Department of Sociology) and Mr. Samitha Udayanga ( Lecturer, Department of Sociology). This workshop was organized to enhance the academic writing skills of undergraduates and to motivate them to engaged in research works.

Lecture Series on “Philosophical Foundation of Epistemology”

Venue:- Auditorium, Department of Sociology

The Sociological Association organized a guest lecture on “Philosophical Foundation of Epistemology”. The lecture was conducted by Rev. G. Sugunasiri Theo ( Lecturer, Department of Pali and Buddhist). Further, the Sociological Association expects to conduct a lecture series based on this theme.

Discussion on the “Education and the Crisis of Current Education System”

Venue:- Professor Ranaweera Banda Memorial Hall

The sociological Association organized a special discussion under the topic of “Education and the Crisis of Current Education System”. Senior Professor Sujeewa Aamrasena, the Vice chancellor of the University of Ruhuna was invited as the chief guest and the key note speaker of the occasion.

“Y Sociology”

The sociological Association conducted a workshop on New Subject Areas of Sociology and the Carrier Opportunities of Sociology Graduates. This workshop was named as “Y sociology”. And the workshop was conducted by Mr.Samitha Udayanga( Lecturer, Department of Sociology) and Mr. Susith Siriwardhena ( Assistant Lecturer, Department of Sociology)

Annual Department trip

Date:- 22^nd and 23^rd of February 2020

The Sociological Association organized the Annual trip in Kandy on 22^nd and 23^rd February,2020. The students who are studying sociology special degree, were privileged to join this event as a result the students of 2000 level,3000 level and 4000 level were participated this event.
