Department of Sinhala

The Department of Sinhala was established in 1978. It is an outstanding department among the eight departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The department offers a wide range of courses in major fields of Sinhala language and literature, including modern and classical literature, literary criticism, folklore studies, theatre and performance, linguistics, mass communication, critical theory, linguistics, creative writing, communication studies and cultural studies.

Sandata Wedi Dura Sandak

The poetry book, Sandata Wedi Dura Sandak written by Mrs Eradhini Hasini Lanka, a probationary lecturer attached to the Department of Sinhala, has been launched on October 28, 2017 at the National Library and Documentation Services Board auditorium. The event was graced by Professor Dharma Rajapaksha, Head of the Department of Sinhala, University of Ruhuna. Distinguished poets, Mr Nandana Weerasinghe and Mr Thimbiriyagama Bandara delivered speeches.

Head's Message

The Department of Sinhala enhances the academic and research activities of the undergraduates and the postgraduates while promoting the related cultural activities of the southern province.

The Department offers courses such as modern and classical literature, literary criticism, folklore studies, theatre and performance, cultural studies, linguistics and mass communication. These courses are particularly designed to enhance the students’ future professional life in the relevant fields. At the present, the Department consists of well trained academic staff members who have local and foreign exposure in relation to their subjects of specialization.
