The Department of English & Linguistics was founded in 2015 and it currently teaches course units in Prescriptive & Descriptive Linguistics, Literature (Fiction, Poetry & Drama), Stylistics, Applied Linguistics, and Language Pedagogy in English for both BA (Special) and (General) Degrees awarded under the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.

Head's Message

I am pleased to send this message to the H&SS Faculty website, representing the Department of English & Linguistics that caters for a timely requirement of the University of Ruhuna in fulfilling its role in the national-level social, cultural, and economic development efforts of Sri Lanka.

The brief introduction to the department makes it clear that it has the potential to help produce an undergraduate in English who is able to take up any challenging academic or professional position that demands an advanced knowledge and expertise in a variety of disciplines in English.

Currently, the department has a regular clientele of 39 students and a regular staff of three academics including the Head.

Under the guidance of its founder Head, Senior Professor Dr EA Gamini Fonseka, the department keeps abreast with the academic, research, and pedagogical practices and procedures maintained in advanced university settings in the rest of the world.
